I love working in the visual realm.
Mainly because I can’t spell very well, and because I like to get out and about to see this big wide world. Doing work experience way back last century for a newspaper back home in South Australia really did decide the direction I wanted to take in life: through a lens.
I became a photographer, and a move to Melbourne to study at uni also meant I was exposed to the music scene in said city. I photographed bands, and after a few years I started directing music videos, about 6o in total. Music videos were like going to film school in some ways — I learned how to tell stories, how to direct, how to imagine, and I got given money to produce the short stories. It’s where I cut my teeth I guess.
The transition into directing TVCs wasn’t seamless. All of a sudden I had to have safety officers on set, I didn’t have to do make up, there was actual catering and it was someone else’s idea, but it taught me the art of collaboration which is such a great ability to possess, as it means all ideas are considered and that makes for better outcomes.
I’m still passionate about photography and will keep exploring that medium till my demise, and making TVCs is a profession I want to continue to grow in and collaborate on — it also pays for my surfboard repairs!
I’ve worked on campaigns for Holden, Honda, Ford, Nintendo, VB, Caltex, iiNet, Telstra, Charter Spectrum (USA), David Jones, Myers, McCains, Cadbury, Lindt, Crown, GMHBA, Canon, The Age, PTV, TAC, Vic Government, ANZ, Ubank, Lipton, McDonalds, Big M, Leggos, Earth Choice, Powershop, AFL, Bonds, Drumstick, and Jim Beam.
I hope you dig my work. Catch you down the track maybe.
